City Council Adopts Vision Zero Resolution to Improve Roadway Safety
In May, Cocoa City Council unanimously approved a resolution to implement in partnership with the Space Coast Transportation and Planning Organization (SCTPO) the goal of Vision Zero in the City of Cocoa. Vision Zero is a fundamentally different way of approaching traffic safety based on the philosophy that traffic fatalities and serious injuries are preventable and the only acceptable number of these is zero. Vision Zero is a data driven, multi-disciplinary approach bringing together diverse and necessary stakeholders to address this complex problem and local governments play an important part in enacting change.
SCTPO staff and contracted consultants recently developed a Vision Zero Action Plan for Brevard County. The action plan outlines activities such as data collection and analysis, and development of SCTPO strategies and actions to support Vision Zero. It also includes a tool kit for local municipalities that can be used to develop and implement Vision Zero at the local level. A huge part of the implementation of Vision Zero will be education. Recognizing the importance of Vision Zero and sharing the information will not only raise awareness but will spur individuals and institutions to change their behavior on our roadways. As part of the resolution, there will be a committee who will oversee the implementation of the Vision Zero Action Plan.
